Natural Therapies for Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia: What Can We Explore?

Book with trichoscopic images

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA) is a form of scarring alopecia that primarily affects postmenopausal women, though it can occur in men and younger women too. It typically causes a progressive recession of the frontal hairline and eyebrow loss, and is often accompanied by inflammation, itching, or redness of the scalp.

While pharmaceutical interventions can be useful, many individuals seek natural therapies to help manage the condition and support scalp health.

As a Trichologist with a holistic philosophy, one of the ways I can approach FFA for patients not wanting to use pharmaceutical interventions, is by reducing inflammation, supporting the skin barrier, and encouraging follicle resilience through natural methods.

Below are just a few examples of natural treatment options (in no particular order) that can be explored with your Trichologist.

1. Anti-inflammatory Scalp Serums

Calming the scalp is a key priority and there are many natural topical serums that may help.

2. Essential Fatty Acids (Omega-3s)

Anti-inflammatory from the inside out, omega-3 fatty acids (found in flaxseed oil, chia seeds, and fish oil) can help reduce the systemic inflammation often seen in autoimmune and inflammatory scalp conditions like FFA.

3. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

While not a supplement or herbal remedy, LLLT is a drug-free, non-invasive option used to stimulate follicles, reduce inflammation and increase cellular energy. It is often well tolerated and used alongside topical support.

4. Antioxidant Support

Antioxidants may help protect the scalp from oxidative damage that exacerbates inflammation.

5. Gut and Hormonal Balance

Holistic care involves identifying underlying triggers. Many individuals with FFA also have signs of hormonal imbalance or gut inflammation. Supporting gut health through:

  • A wholefoods, anti-inflammatory diet

  • Probiotic supplementation

  • Avoiding inflammatory foods like ultra-processed items and excess sugar

  • Supplements that support hormones and inflammation

can all have a beneficial impact on scalp inflammation.

6. Stress Management and Nervous System Support

Chronic stress can perpetuate autoimmune activity. Daily stress-reducing practices such as gentle exercise, mindfulness meditation, acupuncture, or herbal adaptogens, can help support immune balance and overall wellbeing.

Important Notes:

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia is a progressive condition that causes permanent follicle damage. Early diagnosis and proactive management—whether conventional, natural or combined—are essential.

While therapies can support the health of the scalp and reduce progression, they may not fully reverse the condition.

As every person responds differently, any natural treatment plan should be customised with the guidance of a Trichologist or integrative health practitioner.
